Award-winning Barista Sammy Piccolo Brings Artisan Coffee to Surrey
Those who know Artigiano and 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters know Sammy Piccolo, the owner and operator of five Prado coffee shops in Metro Vancouver.
As a four-time Canadian Barista Champion, first ever winner of World Latte Art Championship, winner at the Coffee Fest Latte Art Championship, and four-time top-three placement for Canada at the World Barista Championships, Sammy understands how to get the best out of the café experience.
When asked about why he decided to open another Prado at 3 Civic Plaza Sammy said, “It’s going to be a great café. It’s going to be a meeting place for people. I really feel the energy of this place.”
Prado Café is an awesome addition to the grand lobby and will be one of the many social anchors for the community — for residents, guests and locals alike. Prado will support Civic Hotel with continental breakfast and other menu items. “We’re going to make everything in-house,” adds Sammy. “We’re going to do our own home-style baking, we’re going to do brunch, sandwiches, and the best coffee.”

An influential local blog called Surrey604 partnered with David Smith from David Smith Homes to get an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at one of Century Group‘s most exciting projects: 3 Civic Plaza. In the premier episode of The Local, a Surrey-based web series that focuses on building up our local communities, 3 Civic Plaza is recognized as a local icon that will be alive with visitors, residents, students, government and business people in Surrey.
The episode 3 Civic Plaza – An Icon Arises, places emphasis on the project’s identity as more than just the tallest tower being built in the City of Surrey, but a community. We were asked to share what makes 3 Civic Plaza iconic to the current Surrey community, such as, Prado Cafe’s plans to move into Surrey and a first look at Civic Hotel, Autograph Collection. As we head closer to project completion date that is projected for Fall 2017, we’re happy to see unified support from the City, partners, and other guests, including:

This October, at the Surrey Board of Trade’s Business in Excellence Awards, Century Group released a sneak preview of the new Civic Hotel brand to an enthusiastic audience of entrepreneurs, stakeholders and local business owners, all eager to find out more about this highly anticipated Marriott International hotel.
Civic Hotel at 3 Civic Plaza, Autograph Collection®, is a boutique hotel with 144 guest rooms, a conference floor with two ballrooms, a fitness centre, yoga studio, hair salon and spa, as well as a skydeck bar and special events space on the hotel’s rooftop.
Already, the Civic Hotel’s new Director of Sales, Kristin Bishop, has been busy assisting various groups and events organisers with conference floor bookings. As well as the Board of Trade, the City of Surrey is interested in expanding their event space around the plaza.
While guest room reservations are not yet available, Civic Hotel will be part of Marriott International’s global reservation system and the Marriott Rewards® member program in the new year.

Meet Blair Marriott, Senior Superintendent ITC Construction. With over 30 years of experience, Blair Marriott has served ITC for more than 50 high-rise projects and on many Century Group’s development projects, including Citypoint at Gateway SkyTrain station in North Surrey and here at 3 Civic Plaza. He actively manages all of the sub-trades and ensures the building stays on schedule.
Trained as a structural engineer at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, he decided early on that he preferred to work in construction over engineering, partly due to his father’s influence as a foreman contractor. His training serves him well — he is somewhat of a specialist with 3 Civic Plaza’s unique heating and cooling system, installing thermal breaks and reducing heat loss for the building.
Married for 40 years, with two lovely daughters, Blair loves to travel (particularly on cruises), ride motorcycles (Harley’s, of course) and play hockey in his free time. Blair has also entered and completed more than 30 triathlons. Born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Blair has worked in a number of cities, including Boston, New York, San Diego and Calgary, before settling in Vancouver.
Blair is currently looking forward to getting beyond the mechanical floor at 3 Civic Plaza so that he can get to that next milestone of building up one floor per week! So, every day you see the tower rising higher and higher, you have Blair to thank.
With 2016 upon us, it is a perfect time to acknowledge our accomplishments in 2015 and what we have to look forward to this year. The most exciting news? We will reach the top of the residential tower in October 2016.
ITC are moving very quickly to keep us on schedule. The infographic above shows the projected progress of the building construction in each quarter. Once we have established ‘Tier 1’, the 15th Floor, the tower will rise at a rate of about one floor each week. Of course, it has taken some time to get here. While most people can see the signature ‘guitar pick’ windows continuing to take shape, there’s an amazing amount of work that’s been done inside the project that cannot be seen from the outside… the built-in local energy system and the three hoist elevators, for two examples.
It was a busy year… in 2015 we completed:
All 3 floors of Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s first urban campus (KPU Civic Plaza)
8 of the 16 floors for Surrey’s first Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, including window-wall installation.
All 6 hotel amenity spaces, which includes the pre-function area, convention ballrooms and meeting rooms
Placing more than 50% of the total concrete to be used in the building, with the parkade finished earlier in the year
3 Civic Plaza is beginning to feel like the landmark we expect it to be, and every day brings us closer to Surrey’s vision for a vibrant, active downtown. It is always good news when sales go well. Although we did sell out of a number of floor plans this year, we still have a great selection of spacious suites available. Based on demand and current market conditions, 2016 will see some price adjustments to better reflect the quality and calibre offered at 3 Civic Plaza with its proximity to education, SkyTrain and the Marriott Autograph Collection hotel. The new pricing model also anticipates occupancy in 2017, which shows a 3% to 4% increase for most homes.
While this is excellent news for existing buyers, potential purchasers may end up paying more for the same product over the next 18 months, particularly the closer the project gets to completion and the quality and luxury will be more tangible to see and touch. Come February, Joyce is taking a well-deserved holiday during the Chinese New Year to celebrate her mother’s 100th year birthday!
